It is well documented that AM fungi enhance nutrient availability to plants, in particular, inorganic (ortho)phosphate (P i), by forming far-reaching extraradical mycelia which operate as functional extensions of the plant root system ( 1, 2). Thus, although cytological and physiological features of the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis seem to be conserved, the molecular components may differ significantly between distantly related plant species.Īrbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi associate intimately with the roots of more than 80% of terrestrial plants, growing inter- and intracellularly in the root cortex. Further, there are no structural commonalities in the promoter regions. Assessment of the phylogenetic relationship of the rice and potato protein revealed that the rice is nonorthologous to the potato protein. Recently, a phosphate transporter gene in potato was shown to be induced during arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis. OsPT11 expression complemented a defect in phosphate uptake in a yeast strain mutated in its high-affinity P i transporter ( pho84), thereby confirming its function. Moreover, infection of roots with the fungal pathogens Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium moniliforme did not activate OsPT11, corroborating the high signal specificity for OsPT11 activation in the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis. OsPT11 activation was independent of the nutritional status of the plant and phosphate availability in the rhizosphere. This induction was confined to the root system and was tightly correlated with the degree of root colonization by Glomus intraradices. Considering the sequenced rice genome at hand, only the Oryza sativa phosphate transporter ( OsPT) gene OsPT11 was specifically induced during the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis. We are a hospital, therefore we only qualify for the healthcare/non-profit discount.Using a genome-wide approach, we asked how many transporter genes contribute to symbiotic phosphate uptake and analyzed their evolutionary conservation. This difference is because UC qualifies for the educational discount whereas Children’s Hospital does not. Although Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is affiliated with UC, we are not a degree granting institution. There is a difference in the price of software purchased from Biomedical Informatics at Children’s Hospital versus from the UC Bookstore.

Since Children’s Hospital is a separate entity from UC, installing software purchased from UC on CCHMC owned computers is a violation of that license agreement. However, when purchasing from UC, the license agreement states that the software can be installed only on your personally owned or UC-owned computer and not on machines owned by other institutions. Please make sure you read the license agreement carefully before you use UC software.įaculty and students of UC are eligible to purchase software from UC. In many cases this software is licensed specifically to UC employees only (i.e., people who receive paychecks from UC) or must be run on UC-owned or controlled equipment, making it inaccessible to Cincinnati Children's personnel. UC researchers are served with desktop software by UCIT.
